Dr. Lindsey Hurlbut, DC is a certified medical examiner through the FMCSA National Registry providing DOT exams in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination must be conducted by a licensed “medical examiner” listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry.
Do you need a DOT certified exam and medical certificate?
- Yes, if you have a commercial driver’s license
- Yes, if you drive any commercial vehicle or commercial vehicle-trailer combination with a GVW greater than 10,000 lbs
If you are a driver that requires a medical certificate (also known as your ‘health card’), a DOT medical examination is required at a minimum of every 2 years.
What will we check in your exam?
- Vision: Acuity, Peripheral, Color Blindness
- Hearing
- Blood Pressure
- Physical Exam: Thorough Body System Screen
- Health History Review
- Urinalysis: Checks for Blood, Glucose, Protein
Health Requirements to Pass
- 20/40 vision with or without corrective lenses in each eye as well as both eyes combined.
- Ability to distinguish red, green and amber – colors found on traffic signals.
- Ability to hear a forced whisper at a minimum distance of 5 feet.
- Blood pressure must be lower than 160/100. Less than 140/90 if on prescription medication.
- Blood sugar level must be controlled. Applicant can have diabetes which is controlled through diet or medication. Diabetes which is controlled through insulin injections is not allowed*. *FMCSA diabetic exemptions may be available.
- No use of a Schedule I or II drugs or those considered unsafe while driving, including but not limited to amphetamines, narcotics or other habit forming drugs.
- Current diagnosis of certain conditions require further documentation to pass.
- Cardiovascular disease (i.e. congestive cardiac failure, collapse or cardiac insufficiency): present the Medical Examiner with a stress test along and/or note from your physician which states that you are able to drive a commercial motor vehicle with no restrictions.
- Sleep apnea with prescribed CPAP machine: present the Medical Examiner with proof of compliance, a minimum use of 70%
